Bringing wide experience in both legal practice and law firm management, James joined us as a regular management consultant in 2019. James ensures that we continually work on our business, not just in it, with particular focus on strategic planning, legal team mentoring and operational best practice.

Before launching his consultancy practice in 2016, James built a successful career as a commercial and property solicitor and served as the managing partner of a prominent Otago law firm. Alongside his work with Ford Sumner, James is an active member of the Institute of Directors, contributing his expertise to project-based governance and advisory roles for a diverse range of organizations. His broad professional experience and strategic insight make him a trusted advisor in both legal and governance circles.

Outside of work, James enjoys balancing quality family time with his enduring passion for cricket. He has held key leadership roles within the sport, including serving as Chairman of Otago Cricket and as the team and selection manager for the Otago Volts. These experiences reflect his commitment to teamwork, strategy, and community—values he brings into his professional life as well.
